Humble Beginnings
Before St. Brendan existed, Catholics in Stephenville faced significant challenges practicing their faith. Among these pioneering Catholics was Professor Emil A. Blanchard, a distinguished faculty member at Tarleton State University, whose dedication would shape the future of Catholic life in our community.

1950s
Local Catholics, led by Professor Blanchard, approached Bishop Thomas K. Gorman of the Diocese of Dallas-Fort Worth with their vision for a church in Stephenville.
The bishop entrusted the community to the care of the Pallottine fathers from St. Stephen Catholic Church in Weatherford. During these formative years, Mass was celebrated in various locations, including the basement of the city library.

A Parish is Born
Through remarkable community effort, $10,000 was raised—half from local faithful and half from the Catholic Church Extension Society. On April 13, 1958, St. Brendan Catholic Church was dedicated as a mission of St. Stephen in Weatherford. The original structure included:
-
A small chapel
-
A modest apartment for the priest
-
A meeting hall

Full Parish Status
On February 11, 1960, St. Brendan achieved full parish status, with Father Alphonse Hayes appointed as our first pastor. This marked a significant milestone in our community's journey of faith.

Professor Blanchard's Legacy
Professor Emil "Doc" Blanchard's influence on our parish cannot be overstated. His 36-year career at Tarleton State University, his dedication to Catholic students, and his vision for a Catholic church in Stephenville helped create the foundation for what St. Brendan is today. Before his passing in 1997 at age 100, he witnessed his dream become reality, with the university honoring his contributions by naming Doc Blanchard Boulevard in his memory.
1967
Addition of the priest's residence, what is now used as the St. Brendan Office.
1977
Construction of the original Newman Hall, what is now the Religious Education building.
1980
St. Brendan was remodeled to incorporate more seating and a cryroom.
1996
The second Newman Hall was created, which is the one still in use and christened as "Newman Hall."

Our Parish Today
